We only see Monarchs when they migrate through our neck of the woods, and most of the time there are not that many to be seen, except on the rare year. Therefore, I get excited when I have a chance to photograph them in an environment that is both beautiful, and easy on the photographer.
Capturing the image I want of any butterfly is one the hardest photography challenges I have ever experienced. They don't sit still for long, they don't open their wings the way I want them to, or if they do, they are facing the wrong way, or the light isn't hitting them properly, or the wind is wildly blowing the branches which makes for blurry images.... Well, you get my drift. Those challenges though, are exactly why finally getting a good shot of one is so very rewarding.
Fun fact about Monarchs: Summer Monarchs live about 2-6 weeks long, but the one that migrate up to 3000 miles to Central Mexico for winter live about 9 months!
